Pioneering Cardiology for a Healthier India

Cardiovascular diseases reign as the globe’s top killer, claiming a staggering 17.9 million lives annually. Yet, the impact is especially pronounced in India, where CVDs hold sway as the leading cause of both morbidity and mortality.

Unlike their Western counterparts, where only 23% succumb to CVDs before 70 years, in India, it’s a startling 52%. The World Health Organization predicts dire economic fallout, estimating a whopping $237 billion loss over a decade due to CVDs, encompassing both productivity decline and soaring healthcare costs.

India’s CVD epidemic is marked by a heightened risk burden, early symptom onset, and disproportionately premature deaths. Years of research have delved into why Indians are more vulnerable, pointing to early-life influences shaping unique biological traits. Six key transitions — from demographics to lifestyle — have redefined India’s disease landscape, contributing to its distinct CVD profile.Traditional risk factors, while significant, manifest differently in Indian populations, calling for fresh perspectives and hypotheses.
